History
Himroo Fabrics is your one-stop shop for genuine handmade Himroo sarees and designer Paithani sarees. Founded in 1891 by the father and son duo, Habib Ahmed Quraishi and Bashir Ahmed Quraishi, the Quraishi family is renowned for reviving the art of Himroo in Aurangabad. Himroo Fabrics has established numerous handlooms in the homes of both female and male weavers, allowing them to weave independently. Most designs in our fabrics are inspired by the paintings of the Ajanta and Ellora caves, with the remaining featuring floral Mughal motifs. We offer exclusive textiles, including Himroo bed sheets, that you won't find anywhere else. The factory's owner, Mr. Faisal Quraishi, an engineer, has dedicated himself to supporting the family business and is the sixth-generation descendant of the Quraishi family. An activist in the research, development, and promotion of this art, he has traveled globally to participate in textile seminars, fairs, and exhibitions. His father, Ishtiaq Ahmed Quraishi, was a National Awardee for Himroo weaving, and Faisal continues to carry forward this legacy. Introduction of Himroo
Handwoven 'Himroo' material is a traditional Aurangabad specialty known for its exquisite craftsmanship. Himroo may be woven with silk, wool, cotton, or jari (silver golden thread). Traditionally, it was primarily woven in cotton (wrap) and silk (weft), serving as a more affordable alternative to 'kimkhab', the opulent brocade made of Ik and gold thread favored by royalty in the 14th century. The elegant patterns of Himroo showcase plain lines woven in various geometrical designs, floral motifs inspired by nature, and elements drawn from the paintings of Ajanta Caves, as well as carvings from Ellora Caves, Bibi ka Magbara, and the Taj Mahal.
During the reign of Mohammad Tughlak, when he moved his capital from Delhi to Daulatabad, a generation of craftsmen accompanied him on this adventurous journey. When Tughlak reversed his decision and returned to Delhi, many craftsmen chose to remain, continuing their legacy by supplying textile products such as stoles, shawls, and even Himroo bed sheets to royal households. Some historians believe that Himroo weaving has roots in Persia, while local historians argue that it has little or no Persian influence.
Kings and queens from the medieval era amassed vast collections of Himroo shawls in their wardrobes. The renowned traveler Marco Polo was gifted a Himroo shawl during his visit to the Deccan region, where he described it in his memoirs as "fine as a spider's web, and Kings and Queens of any country will take pride in wearing it." According to the Textiles Association of India, Himroo was highly endorsed by the Nizam and Mughal nobility, further solidifying its status in the world of textiles.

Over the years, Aurangabad has become well-known for its hand-woven Himroo shawls, which are highly recommended as souvenirs from the region. The intricate process involves two workers—a weaver and an assistant—who sit across the loom, skillfully interlacing the weft yarn with the warp yarn at right angles. It takes them 15 days to weave a single Himroo shawl, making it a true work of art. Paithani Saree
Known the world over as a poem hand woven in silk and gold, the Paithani is for those with a discreet and refined taste. Coveted in India since the 2nd century B.C. (Shalivahan era), this exquisite fabric is a precious heirloom passed down from mother to daughter for several generations, much like the cherished himroo bed sheets and himroo sarees that symbolize heritage. A skilled weaver can create only an inch of this unique cloth in a day, showcasing traditional creative artistry and painstaking workmanship. Here in our weaving center, we have revived the ancient art of weaving from the 19th century, once patronized by the Nizams of Hyderabad. During their regime, floral designs were introduced into the Paithani, including the Ajanta Lotus and Asawli, alongside traditional parrot and peacock motifs. We are one of the renowned weavers of Himroo and Paithani weaving, with over a century of experience. We welcome you to Himroo Fabrics, a historic weaving center located in the heart of Aurangabad. Our founder, Mr. Bashir Ahmed Quraishi, along with his father, Mr. Habib Ahmed Quraishi, established this weaving center in 1891. Currently, our business operations are led by Mr. Faisal Ishtiaq Quraishi, the 6th generation descendant of the Quraishi family. He is an activist in the research, development, and promotion of the traditional art of Himroo and has traveled to the USA, Europe, Japan, and Middle Eastern countries to participate in textile seminars, fairs, and exhibitions.
Mr. Quraishi is also involved in maintaining and running a cottage industry in the region, which supports the livelihood of about 300 families.
